Meet Abby Haliti, the Celebrity Hair Stylist to Know
February 15, 2021
Dear Abby,
Could you share with us some of your career highlights?
There are so many special moments in my career, but I must say one of the most special moments was when I had the honor of working with Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver. She gave me an autograph for my young daughter who loves Avatar. I've also had the honor of meeting so many wonderful people who work in a variety of fields. I've learned so much from my clients.
What characteristics were crucial in helping you become a top colorist with an exclusive clientele?
Being authentic is crucial. Clients can always tell when you take the time to care for them and what they are looking for. I also try to simplify my approach to coloring hair, and as a result my clients have a simpler maintenance routine. I don't want them to worry too much about upkeep or to overdo it with products just to maintain their look.
My "less is more" philosophy is what I go by.
It’s clear that you enjoy connecting with people. What or who do you credit with this kind of priceless gift?
I believe that presence is key. When I'm with a client, I'm grounded and attuned to the present moment. Also, what I said about authenticity applies here as well. I genuinely love connecting with people, meeting new people, and helping them feel empowered.
The way I see it is that everything is energy and I always approach my work with good intentions.
2020 was a wild and difficult year. How have you managed to stay focused and maintain a positive outlook for what lies ahead?
My mother used to say, "we are stronger than we know." I lost my sister when I was a young girl and that experience showed me that I can get through even the darkest moments.
This global pandemic has awakened many of us. Our true strength comes through in moments of hardship. Last year made it possible for me to slow down and reconnect with myself. To stay positive, I try my best to remain in the present moment and to get out of my head. I know this hardship will not last forever and I do my best to connect with my faith.
As a master colorist, can you share a piece of professional advice on how to deal with color given all the pandemic related restrictions?
I don't recommend coloring at home. One mistake can result in damage which will require a color-correction procedure. Eventually you may decide to change your color and box dye can be very hard to work with as a professional colorist. Consumer products are not the same as professional products. I recommend a spray if you need to cover root regrowth because it's safer.
What are your favorite ways to rewind and reboot?
I enjoy getting massages, lighting incense and candles, and having a lot of plants around me. Unwinding in this atmosphere while drinking green juice and listening to soothing music is my go-to. I also feel great when I exercise.
Who are your favorite collaborators and friends?
My favorite person to work with is Andre Davis with whom I've collaborated with for years. I love him dearly and we always have a good time laughing when we're together. He is like family to me.
Now that you know more about HocTok, is it something you’d recommend?
Yes! I love learning new things and connecting with people. Continuing to support artists is great.
#BeathTheBlues– This is one of our ongoing campaigns focused on mental health. What do you do to take care of your mental health?
I meditate when I can and I enjoy listening to podcasts. Taking care of my physical health helps my mental health. I think we live in a culture that prioritizes being busy all of the time, so I make sure I give myself time each week to unplug and unwind. A favorite quote...
“What matters more than any of that is living your life with real integrity, and that means always doing the right thing—even when no one is watching." - Joseph Arnold Hayes
Your wishes and hopes for 2021…
I hope we show more kindness and compassion towards each other. Let’s spread more love.
