Greatness - my assignment: how do I understand greatness? What does it mean? What will it take to achieve it? I don't know. I am a little bit overwhelmed by all the usage of "great" "greater" "greatest" or "greatness". I'm tired of hearing these words. Maybe I've heard them said at the wrong time by the wrong people.
Self proclaimed modern day prophets share their greatest sermons with an exclusive few. How about hearing from a handful of good men and women who share sound advice with everyone in their communities inspiring people to be good to themselves, each other and the world we all share?
Great leaders of the greatest people give good and bad speeches, but they have not taken the necessary actions to inspire confidence. What if these great leaders avoid feeding the superiority complex in some and motivate the majority of people to focus on real world problems with the aim of finding long term solutions?
Maybe the current global pandemic could not have been avoided. But maybe we could and definitely should have been a bit more prepared to deal with it. Many of us are locked inside our great homes in the greatest cities of the world. Our kids, whether they were going to great schools or not the greatest schools a week ago, have now collectively enriched their vocabularies with words and phrases such as "home schooling," "quarantine," "remote work," "social distancing," "pandemic," etc..
Great restaurants are closed for business. Great chefs are out of work. Great restaurant and hospitality workers have lost their main if not only source of income and many of them have no savings to pay rent or cover basic expenses. Insert antonyms of great here - that's where we are at right now. In the meantime, we are sharing online great recipes for greatest lunch and dinners using frozen ingredients.
World's greatest entertainers do regular stuff and share them trying to keep us all in a great mood because their great personalities and talents cannot be showcased in big venues in times of curfews and limits on group gatherings.
For one thing, I don't mind saying that all those great influencers with their greatest feeds have suddenly become irrelevant. During this global pandemic we have come to realize that there are no superheroes. However, there are humans who sacrifice all they've got to help others. These are first responders, doctors, nurses, scientists, firefighters, police officers, educators, and insert here all those who have to leave their homes to serve the greater good.
Maybe deep down I know I'll never do anything great and that's why I don't know what to say about greatness. Maybe that's why I can only focus on small things that can be good and helpful. Maybe I'm more interested in relevance rather than greatness in these days of total uncertainty. The most relevant actors in this crazy reality are the ones who will pinpoint connecting dots of greatness in the name of our common humanity. Those who act decisively and selflessly, keeping their cool under mounting pressure, will define greatness. We better take note and follow their lead.
