The Wire
by Elliot Lim
Dear Elliot, Who are some of the wonderful people you know throughout your work and beyond? Oh, way too many to name. I think you take something from every working relationship, be it shared knowledge, a new perspective, or camaraderie. Even the bad relationships teach you things, maybe even more so than the good ones. That said, I count myself lucky. I’ve worked with some great people both in and out of my industry. Where do you usually go for good stories? |

Lots of places. Books, movies, podcasts. Lately, I must admit I’ve been binge-watching a lot of great TV shows.
What are your favorite design inspirations?
Numerous, but one illustrator whose work I keep close to my heart is Charley Harper. I love the simple elegance of his forms and compositions.
How would you describe the Bay Area art scene from a local’s perspective?
Honestly, although I grew up here, I’m ‘new’ to the area again, so to speak. I only recently moved back after spending the last 15 years in LA, Chicago, and NY, so I can’t speak with any authority on the art scene. I can say that the motion graphics industry is not quite as prevalent as in the aforementioned cities. Most of my work is done remotely.

I designed and animated this piece as an homage to my favorite show of all time, HBO's The Wire.
Have you made any New Year’s resolutions you’re set to keep?
Nothing specific. But I always have the vague goal of ending the year in a better place than I started, both professionally and personally.
What are the things you’re most proud of achieving last year?
I got married, announced that we’re expecting, and successfully switched coasts. It’s been a big year.
Who are the most exciting people and what are some of the major events you’re looking forward to in the upcoming months?
The most exciting person is the one I have yet to meet, who’s due in late May.
Tell us the most exciting thing you’ve heard lately and how has that affected your life or work flow…
Hmm, you got me. I haven’t heard anything super profound lately. Although I did just read that San Francisco’s fog contains a toxic chemical…
A parting thought for those who’ve not encountered your work so far…
Hope you enjoy it.
